In July I had the chance to be invited as a speaker to the SQ1 CONFERENCE in Chicago. One of the greatest events on the topic of sketching where I met many young American talents and tried to help them push their skills to the next level, design better products and live from their passion. God bless America! Jacob is a Senior Industrial Designer at Newell Brands in Kalamazoo, MI. He graduated from Purdue University in 2009 and after, started his own freelance design business. He then transitioned to the global ID team at Purina Petcare in St. Louis. There, he helped the team create the future product vision for pet owners and their furry family members. His last design adventure brought him to Denver, CO where he co-ran a design studio focused on lifestyle products and tapping into the rich entrepreneurial culture that Denver fostered. Today, at Newell, he works within the Global Design Center and gets to play with cross-disciplines to help create the future within an ever-growing portfolio of products and brands. He’s found a love for interacting with the Instagram Design Community and you can find him through his handle @sketchfresh.

Reid Schlegel is a NYC based Industrial Designer with a solid history working in the design consulting and education space. He is currently a Senior Industrial Designer at Aruliden and previously worked at frog and SMART Design. As a design educator Reid teaches at the Parsons School of Design and visits Universities and Companies globally to guest lecture and teach his design process methodologies and design skills. Additionally, Reid runs an Instagram account with 135k+ followers showcasing his work and other design related content. Reid graduated from Virginia Tech’s industrial design program and was the 2012 IDSA student merit award winner.

Kelly Lin is a strategic Industrial Designer with a heart for international markets. At Kaleidoscope, she has designed for brands across various categories including Thermos, Sylvania, Unilever and major companies in the Middle East. Chicago is where she calls home but Kelly also embraces the opportunities of designing for foreign and developing markets. She collaborates on-site with companies in Kuwait and Dubai catering to unique regional consumer profiles and need states. Her passion is incorporating strategy, graphic, and industrial design into a cohesive brand experience. Constantly curious and inspired, she also operates her own crowdsource funded STEM toy start-up, Miss Possible, showcasing a line of dolls based on inspirational women. Kelly just recently launched her dream illustration Etsy business, SketchBites, featuring whimsical food and fashion illustrations.

@sketchadaydotcomSpencer Nugent, founder of IDSKETCHING.COM and Sketch-A-Day.com, has been engaged in providing free, high quality online design sketching tutorials and on-site sketch workshops since 2008. He has created an extensive online network and following within the Industrial Design community and continues to connect with students and design professionals via his online websites. His experience includes working at General Motors in Warren, Michigan, San Francisco based design firm Astro Studios, heading up his own design consultancy, Studio Tminus where he worked with several clients primarily in the consumer electronics and apparel industries. Spencer has worked with brands such as Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett Packard, BodyGlove, Adidas, Verifone, Kyocera Altec Lansing, Hasbro, Dell, Tupperware and Motorola. Most recently, Spencer has been involved in managing industrial design for Vivint Smart Home.

As for me I worked with students and try to teach them some of the simplified techniques from my course. Really trying to break down the steps of sketching so it becomes clear and easy to reproduce them. It was a GREAT experience so I want to thank all those who joined my workshops as I really enjoyed it and hope it was useful for you guys too.

Dominic is an award-winning American designer working for Umbra in Toronto, Canada. Dom graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) in 2013 with a BFA in industrial design and minor in graphic design. During his summers, he interned at Volume Studios, where he learned all he knows about sketching, and at Motorola, where he sharpened his CAD and eye for detail. Alongside his schooling, he worked part time as a designer with a startup company at Case Western Reserve University and freelanced as well. His senior year, Dom won a Good Design award with Todd Herlitz for a product he worked on at Volume Studios, an AICUO award for visual arts and design, and lastly, First, Second, and Third places at the International Housewares Student Design Competition. For his senior thesis, Dom developed a set of tools allowing farmers in former conflict zones to farm land contaminated with unexploded ordnance (UXO), with a special focus on his mother’s home country, Laos. For his work, he was awarded a post-graduate grant by the CIA to travel to Laos to conduct further research for the project. He has a poorly maintained Instagram account, @dom.design, where you can follow works as recent as two years ago.

Derek Cascio is a Boston-based designer, illustrator and educator. Derek currently works as an Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He is a co-founder of Design Museum Boston, now Design Museum Foundation, and is also co-founder of 4th Law Labs where he works to bring gamified educational products to college level classrooms. @nickpbakerNicholas Baker is a designer and maker currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. Born and raised in North Carolina, Nicholas started making at a young age in his grandfather’s woodshop. After discovering his passion for art and engineering, Nicholas went on to study industrial design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. He interned with a wide range of companies including Boy Scouts of America, Enventys, and HunterGatherer while in school. After graduating in 2015 with a BFA in industrial design, Nicholas moved to Fort Worth, Texas to design full-time for Petmate Pet Products. Nicholas designed 80+ products for Petmate ranging from rubber toys to soft goods to litter boxes. He left Petmate in 2017 to pursue new opportunities in New York City. Nicholas launched a design brand, almost object, in 2017. After freelancing part-time for many years, Nicholas started a full-time industrial design studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In his free time, he enjoys experimenting in virtual reality, instagramming, and podcasting.

Jeff Smith, IDSA, is an industrial designer currently working for Autodesk as an Education Manager. With a diverse background in product design and development, Smith brings this experience to a team that supports Fusion360 in higher education within the United States. Prior to Joining Autodesk, Smith worked for more than 20 years as design director of Reflex Design, Inc. A Ft. Lauderdale, FL based consulting group serving a range of domestic and international clients. The diversity of products included Fitness Equipment, Medical, Industrial, Consumer and Kitchen products. Jeff also spent eight years as adjunct faculty at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale. While there, Jeff taught Solidworks, Sketching, Product Design, Personal Watercraft Design and Design for manufacturing. In conjunction with the AiFL, Jeff also built an internship program with Reflex Design and the school. In addition to work experience, Jeff also served as Chapter Chair for the IDSA’s Florida Chapter and has presented at many District and National Conferences.
